Amazon's £9 gadget with 48,000 ratings could drastically reduce airline fees (2025)

Nothing ruins a holiday quite like hauling your luggage onto the check-in belt, only to discover it's a few kilos heavier than planned. Travellers then have to cough up a baggage fee, eating into the spending money that they'd rather went on poolside cocktails than lining an airline's pockets.

However, shoppers who spend just £9.41 on this handy gadget from Amazon (all prices correct at the time of writing) can save themselves the stress - and cost - of overweight baggage, just by using the FREETOO portable digital weight scale.

The easy-to-read scale, which was £19.99 before its 53% discount, has a large LCD screen that can even be viewed in the dark, and its high precision technology means its accuracy does not exceed 0.01kg. It can handle weights of up to 50kg, which should be plenty for even the most dedicated over-packer, and since it's compact and lightweight, travellers can take it away with them to check their souvenir-buying doesn't get out of hand.

Using the scales to weigh luggage couldn't be easier: simply hook them over the top handle of the bag and lift, taking the reading from the LCD screen. In seconds, travellers will know whether their bag meets the requirements for their airline and adjust their packing accordingly.

With 4.6 out of 5 stars from 48,062 ratings, it's clear that shoppers are loving this bit of kit.

"Great little tool. Was very accurate and light weight to take on holiday to check suitcase weights," said one happy shopper.

"Puts my mind at rest when packing for holidays as I get very nervous at the weighing machine at airport check in. This gives a very accurate weight, so no more worrying," said another.

"Everyone should have one one of these items, especially if you travel a lot and don't want to get caught out with a cabin bag just over the limit," added a third.

However, some shoppers weren't so impressed. They cite issues with accuracy and longevity, which is something for buyers to bear in mind.

One said: "Really don't understand why this product has such a high star rating as it is utter rubbish. Weighing the same bag in the space of seconds multiple times came back with different readings varying up to half a kilo."

"Very poor quality, broke on second trip" said another. "It states 50kg luggage scale but broke when used for 20 kg."

Another luggage scale option comes from Argos, with its Featherstone Luggage Digital Scale for sale for £10. It has an easy-to-read digital display, and the ability to switch from kilos to pounds at the press of a button.

For shoppers who prefer an analogue option, Dunelm's Mechanical Travel Scales are just £4 and include a one metre measuring tape. These scales can handle up to 32kg, and have an easy grip handle to make weighing luggage effortless.

However, for a bargain set of scales that handle lots of weight, the FREETOO portable digital weight scale on Amazon is a great buy.
