Box Office Triumph: 'One Battle After Another' Claims $8.8M Opening Day (2025)

In a striking display of cinematic prowess, Warner Bros. has launched its latest film, "One Battle After Another," which raked in an impressive $8.8 million on its opening day, combining earnings from Friday and advance screenings across 3,634 theaters in North America. This figure includes revenue from special fan-first screenings that took place on Tuesday, showcasing the film in premium large-format auditoriums, which undoubtedly contributed to its strong start.

The studio has invested heavily in this hyper-modern action epic directed by the acclaimed Paul Thomas Anderson and starring the renowned Leonardo DiCaprio, with production costs exceeding $130 million before even considering the global marketing expenses. Anderson has certainly delivered a film that resonates with critics, as "One Battle After Another" is already being hailed as a modern classic, positioning itself as a formidable contender in the upcoming awards season. Audience reactions have also been overwhelmingly positive, with CinemaScore giving it an impressive "A" grade. This is a notable contrast to the "C" grade received by Anderson's earlier work, "Boogie Nights," back in 1997. Furthermore, this marks DiCaprio's highest CinemaScore since his iconic role in "Titanic," which achieved an "A+" in the same year.

The film's unique and lavish theatrical release strategy includes screenings in Imax and other premium formats, as well as 70mm and Imax 70mm showings. Remarkably, there are even four venues showcasing the film in the rarely used VistaVision format, which Anderson chose for the film's production. These premium viewing options come with higher ticket prices, which help to boost overall box office earnings.

Currently, projections suggest that "One Battle After Another" is on track to open within the anticipated range of $20 million to $25 million. The best-case scenario would see the film benefiting from glowing reviews and strong word-of-mouth, maintaining its appeal among audiences week after week. However, with a somewhat modest debut, the film will need to generate significant buzz and attract a substantial international audience to ensure profitability in theaters.

Interestingly, it won’t take much for this film to become Anderson's highest-grossing release to date. In a candid moment during an August interview with Esquire, the director humorously acknowledged his past struggles at the box office, referring to himself as "box-office challenged." His previous top-grossing film, "There Will Be Blood," released in 2007, earned $40 million domestically and $76 million worldwide. For Warner Bros., this release comes on the heels of an unprecedented streak, with seven consecutive films opening above $40 million domestically—a historic achievement in Hollywood. "One Battle After Another" serves as a crucial test for the studio, given its significant financial investment.

In a contrasting move, Universal is debuting the family-friendly "Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie" in 3,500 theaters, aiming for a second-place finish after generating $4.3 million on Friday and previews. Current estimates suggest an opening weekend total of around $13.6 million, which falls within the pre-weekend tracking range of $12 million to $15 million. This film, produced by DreamWorks Animation, adapts the beloved animated Netflix series that has captivated audiences with 11 seasons since its launch in 2021. The big-screen adaptation, which combines live-action and animation, had a production budget of $32 million and is expected to perform well with its target audience, as evidenced by its "A+" CinemaScore.

Additionally, Lionsgate is releasing "The Strangers: Chapter II," the second installment in a planned trilogy directed by Renny Harlin. This horror sequel earned $2.4 million on Friday and previews from 2,690 locations, with projections estimating a three-day opening of approximately $5.6 million. This figure is significantly lower than the $11.8 million debut of the first film, "The Strangers: Chapter I," which premiered in May 2024. Despite undergoing extensive reshoots to enhance the sequel, audience reception has been lukewarm, reflected in its disappointing "C-" CinemaScore. Fortunately, the film's production budget was relatively modest at $8.5 million, and Lionsgate has plans for a third chapter in the series.

After dominating the domestic box office for two consecutive weekends, Sony and Crunchyroll’s "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" is projected to drop to third place, earning an additional $1.8 million on Friday. The film is expected to reach a total of $6.8 million in its third weekend, marking a 61% decline. However, these earnings are largely a bonus following its record-breaking opening weekend, and the film is on track to achieve a remarkable domestic total of $117.8 million by Sunday, making it the 15th highest-grossing North American release of 2025—a milestone that would have seemed unimaginable for an anime film just a few years ago.

Warner Bros. is also vying for a top-three finish with "The Conjuring: Last Rites," which earned another $2 million on Friday, reflecting a 46% drop from its daily total the previous week. This New Line horror sequel is projected to reach $161 million by the end of its fourth weekend, a fantastic outcome considering its $55 million budget. Although marketed as the final chapter in the saga of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it’s hard to believe that this franchise is truly finished after achieving its highest box office success to date.

In other noteworthy developments, Universal’s horror film "Him" is experiencing a significant decline in its second weekend, with projections indicating a staggering 71% drop due to poor reviews. It is expected to finish with a domestic total of $20.9 million, which is disappointing given its $27 million production budget. Similarly, Sony’s "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey" is also fading quickly, with a projected $1.2 million in its second weekend after a lackluster opening. The anticipated 10-day domestic total for this $45 million project is only $5.9 million.
