I (Robin Ek, TGG) have been wanting to do an interview with the creator of the “HDoom” for quite some time now. Well, my long wait ended the other day. As I managed to get a hold of HDoomGuy, whom just happens to be the father of “HDoom”. So we talked about everything from “HDoom”, his thoughts on lewd games, “Doom 2016” to his plans for “HDoom” in the future. So without any further ado, please enjoy my interview with HDoomGuy.

As it´s something of an old fashion for us to ask everyone whom we interview for an introduction of themselves. Well, would you be so kind and do so?
HDoomGuy
Sure! I’m HDoomguy – I’ve been spriting in the public eye for about 5-6 years within the Doom community, and I started HDoom itself around April of 2014. I’ve also worked with various other mods and small games before and inbetween my work on HDoom.
“HDoom” literally allows its players to get laid with the monsters and demons from the “Doom” universe.

How, when, where and why did you create HDoom? And did your original idea for the mod change over time? Or did the mod turn out just the way that you originally wanted it to?
HDoomGuy
I started HDoom around April 2014. I was inspired by a multitude of factors, really – I think the seed of this idea was first planted in around 2013 when I saw this image for the first time during a curious Pixiv search. I was playing games like Monster Girl Quest and Eroico at the time, and it was about that time that I started wondering what a Doom-themed Monster Girl game would be like.
I don’t think my idea for the mod has changed too much over time! I always wanted it to be a light-hearted erotic game/eroge mixed with traditional FPS gameplay. The VN mode was something I had considered early on, but I didn’t put a lot of thought into it until about 3 versions in, when one of my coder friends in the Doom community showed me several ways it could be done within the engine and offered to help give it a headstart.
Well, I guess that demons needs some lovin in their lives as well.

How has the response been for HDoom so far? And do you have a rough idea of how many people who have downloaded the mod?
HDoomGuy
The response has been pretty nice! Most of the people I’ve seen who are into this kinda thing seem to like it – people who aren’t into this stuff aren’t into it quite as much. I think at least 10k have downloaded the latest version alone.

Is the current version of HDoom more or less lewd than the first version of the mod? And do you intend to make the game even more lewd in the future?
HDoomGuy
Definitely got more lewd, and it’s definitely gonna continue to get more lewd – that’s a given since it’s only gonna have more content as development continues.
Well, to be fair. Doomguy really deserves to get some “real” action.

Is it possible to play HDoom on PS4 or Xbox One? I´m asking because people keep asking me about that one.
HDoomGuy
No idea! Don’t have either console so I’m not sure if there are any homebrew ports or anything that could run HDoom.

Have ID or anyone else of the original Doom creators said anything about HDoom so far? Furthermore, isn´t there a risk that HDoom might end up in the same situation as DoomRL did? (the developers had to change the name of the logo and the DoomRL homepage).

John Romero has indicated that he’s aware of its existence. I can’t speak for him, but he at least doesn’t seem terribly bothered by it. As for the whole DoomRL situation, HDoom is a modification for Doom that relies on Doom to run, plus the whole DoomRL situation was complicated by the kickstarter for the sequel I believe. I’m pretty sure I’ll be alright.
ID Softwares “Doom” still has one of the best (and coolest) weapon arsenals to date. Nevertheless, I still love “Project Brutality“, “Brutal Doom” and “Brutal Doom 64” a whole lot.

Have you been a fan of the Doom series for a long time? And when did your Doom fandom start? Furthermore, which Doom title do you like the best so far? And why?

God, I think I first picked it up in 99/2000 or so. My favorite one is probably The Ultimate Doom, since it’s the one I started out with and it has some of the best level design imo.

Since HDoom Techdemo 8a was released back in June last. I have to ask you if you have any idea when the next HDoom build will be released? And what do you have planned for the next release?
HDoomGuy
Not sure – It’ll definitely be sometime this year. Only reason updates take so long sometimes is because new monster sprites take a lot of effort + I like my updates to be substantial. Though, I may consider doing smaller updates in between larger additions. As for what will be in the next version, I’m *hoping* to have the Spider Mastermind done, but other than that I tend to just go with the flow or whatever ideas pop into my head.
“Monster girl Quest” and Kyieru’s games were some HDoom´s inspirations.

What were your inspirations while creating HDoom?
HDoomGuy
I think Monster Girl Quest and Kyieru’s games (Eroico, Kurovadis, etc) were major inspirations. MGQ kinda introduced me to the whole idea of ‘monster girls’ – where as Kyieru’s H-games served as a good example that intermixing hentai with traditional gameplay is feasible/doable.

Have you created lewd spirits, pictures and content for a long time? And how did you get into that art niché?
HDoomGuy
Again, I think that goes back to around when I discovered Monster Girl Quest – so I guess I first started playing with making somewhat lewd content.
The “Senran Kagura” series is a perfect example of when one shouldn´t judge the book by its cover. As the series offers a lot more than “just” lewd content.

What´s your take on lewd games in general? And do you think that lewd games are more popular as accepted nowadays? (that´s at least the vibes that I get).
HDoomGuy
As you can probably tell, I like lewd games – especially when they have a good bit of creativity or charm. And yeah, I do think there’s much more viability for lewd games and the like these days – I’ve been seeing a lot more of them on Steam and the like now that they’ve loosened restrictions a good bit, plus there’s other services like Nutaku for more ‘hardcore’ content. On top of that, I’ve been noticing more Japanese games making their way over to the west in uncut format, so that’s a good sign.

Do you have any idea what the HDoom demographics look like? As I´m rather curious to find out if a lot of females play the mod as well.

No idea, I’m afraid! I’m not sure anything I use actually tells me that kinda info.
I wouldn´t want to be the one who ends up at the bottom, if you know what I mean.

What can people do in-order to help you and HDoom? Because I do recall that I saw an “HDoom To-Do List” not so long ago. I would also like to ask you if it´s a big no no to sell HDoom t-shirts such? (I guess that ID would be all over that one).

Ah, what I need more than anything right now is more spriters who can work with Doom styled sprites and help out for quicker content updates, though I may also be taking on some writers once I get the basic story stuff set up for the VN mode. Some people who can map would be cool as well! And yeah, I don’t have any plans of pushing my luck with t-shirts and the like, needless to say.

Which games did you enjoy the most last year? And which games are you looking forward to playing this year?

Doom 2016 and Shadow Warrior 2 were a lot of fun!. I’m not entirely sure I know all of what’s coming out this year, but I’m a big fan of Friday the 13th so I’m looking forward to the official game – it looks fun as hell.
In my opinion, ID did a really good job with “Doom 2016”.

Which Doom mods and Wads do you like the most? And did you enjoy ID´s new Doom game?

Might be a bit biased since I worked on it, but I still love Demonsteele a lot as far as gameplay mods go. Outside of that, I’m a big fan of Equinox, UAC Utra, Dradys, Icarus, and many others that I just can’t dig up off the top of my head. And yeah – Doom 16 was refreshing as f*ck. Had a ton of fun with it.

What´s your plans for 2017? And what do you hope to achieve with HDoom this year?

Well, as mentioned earlier, I’m hoping to get the Spider Mastermind finished. On top of that, I’ve started writing the basic story elements for the VN mode. I’m hoping it will be a good year!
